Through a variety of structured and open-ended activities, Kindergartners learn how to verbalize and modulate their feelings as well as relate to one another in a classroom community. The class begins the year in social studies by examining “ourselves, our family and our community," moving to thematic units in the second half of the year. In Language Arts, students learn the foundational skills needed to become good readers, writers, and communicators. Kindergartners develop the habits of mind to support growth in math throughout school, connecting with the world of numbers and number sense. They take advantage of both indoor and outdoor ‘classrooms’ for hands-on learning; favorite elements of the curriculum include self-directed play with math manipulatives and nature play, nature class, baking, and relationship-building with Fifth Grade “Reading Buddies.”
