Explorers Camps

Five camps, five themes. For children ages 6-12.

Science Explorers

(June 24-28)

About the Camp

Do you have a budding scientist who loves to be out in nature? Join us for an exciting week exploring our 11 acre campus. Campers will enjoy hands-on, playful experiments designed to get them thinking about the world around them. With woods, fields, a compost pile full of creepy-crawlies, and a variety of resident plants and animals, Science Explorers has plenty to keep your young scientist curious!

Meet the Lead Explorer

Amanda Davis teaches Science to children ages 3-9 here at PMFS. She is known for her wonderful relationship with her students and the sense of fun she brings to every class. Amanda loves to build activities around students’ interests and engage kids by letting them take the lead in problem solving. Your Science Explorer is in for a treat with Amanda leading the adventure!

Sports Explorers

(July 1-5, off July 4)

About the Camp

Join us this summer for Sports Explorers, a Summer Olympics themed camp! Fun games, healthy competition, and a good time are the stars of the week! Each day we will explore different games and skills culminating in our very own awards ceremony at the end of the week. Your runners and jumpers will make new friends while engaging in fun activities, building motor skills, learning to work as a team, and much more in this fun-packed camp!

Meet the Lead Explorer

Mišo Vukčević teaches Physical Education at PMFS. Before moving to the US, he played basketball for a professional team in Cyprus and attended regular summer camps with the National Team of Montenegro. Besides encouraging the physical development of his students, Mišo considers his job to be cherishing and preparing children to have an impact in the world.

Wilderness Explorers

(July 8 – 12)

About the Camp

Your child can learn outdoor skills from an expert during a week of backpacking and camping in Pennsylvania’s wilderness. The first two days (8:00 am-3:30 pm) will be spent on the PMFS campus, getting ourselves prepared and our equipment ready for a three-day backpacking adventure. Depending on the group, we will hike in the French Creek State Park area, or adventure further to the Hammersley Wild Area on the Susquehannock Trail (Potter & Clinton Counties). We will return back to PMFS at the end of our trip. Parents are invited to come along on our wilderness adventure (parent tuition is included with price of child).

Meet the Lead Explorer

David Kern is the Interim Head of School at PMFS. He has led wilderness hiking and canoeing trips for youth and young adults for over 30 years. He is an avid birder (he recently went on a birding trip to Panama!), loves to fish, and believes the best way to really appreciate the beauty of nature is to get out into it as often as possible!

Theater Explorers

(Week 1: July 8-12 / Week 2: July 15-19)

About the Camp

Does your child love theater? Have they ever asked you what happens behind the curtain of a theatrical production? Theater Explorers is the place for them! In this two-week camp, kids will gain hands-on experience in every aspect of creating a theater production: acting, singing, writing and story-telling, light and set design, stage-presence, costume design, and so much more! Students will also be given free-play time to enjoy our beautiful 11-acre campus and playground. The two weeks of Theater Explorers are a cumulative experience, and families are strongly encouraged to sign up for both weeks.

Meet the Lead Explorers

Pictured left to right: John B Hedges, Gillian Pokalo, Kelly O’Rourke.

Before becoming our Music teacher at PMFS, John B taught music at the college level and toured internationally with an orchestra as a composer. John B directs our Sixth Grade musical every spring, and is known for his process-oriented approach to teaching. Gillian teaches Art at PMFS while also achieving success as a working artist. Gillian is also a playwright, and wrote this year’s Sixth Grade musical. Kelly translated her career as a professional stage manager to her current job managing PMFS’s Main Office. She can’t wait to share her insider’s knowledge of the biz with your young performer!

Dance Explorers

(July  22 – 26)

About the Camp

In this exciting camp, your child will explore many styles of dance — from ballet to hip-hop, jazz to creative movement. Campers will learn the history of dance and become familiar with legendary choreographers. This will be a fun-filled, welcoming, supportive space for your camper to build confidence. Children will learn about different ways to dance within a group, as an individual, and simply move to the music judgement-free!

Meet the Lead Explorer

Sara Brown, lovingly known as “Miss Sara” by many, has been teaching dance for over 14 years all over Philadelphia. Sara has owned dance studios, run dance programs at recreation centers, and now serves as Artistic Director and Movement Educator at Free To Be Dance Academy in West Mount Airy. Sara has been very popular as a teacher at PMFS’s after-school dance programs.
