Search Committee Bios

Nicole Armstrong:
Nicole and her daughter have been members of the PMFS community for 3 years. With her daughter in First Grade, Nicole serves on the PTO, is a class parent and is currently the Co-Coordinator of the PTO Food Program. She is a part of the Enrollment and Outreach Task Force at PMFS and serves as a new parent mentor. Nicole is a graduate of Temple University, and has a Masters in Clinical Social Work from Bryn Mawr College of Social Work and Social Research.

Genevieve Schmidt Camacho:
Genevieve is Assistant Teacher in Second Grade at PMFS as well as Dean of Faculty and Students. An alum herself, Genevieve (’82) is also an alumni parent of Nayeli ’14 and Elena Paz ’17, who are in 7th and 10th grades at Abington Friends School. Genevieve began her teaching career in Bilingual Education, and is the former director of the Cooperative Nursery School at the Unitarian Society of Germantown. She received her Masters in the Art of Teaching at University of San Francisco.

Shawn Craig-Parker:
Shawn is an alumni parent who served in many roles while her children were at PMFS, including Room Parent and Strawberry Festival Classroom Chair. She received her Bachelors and Masters of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Delaware and University of Maryland, respectively. Her children are now in 7th and 10th grade at Abington Friends School.

Jennifer Couzin Frankel:
Jenny and her husband Rich have two children currently enrolled in PMFS, in kindergarten and third grade. She has served as a Room Parent, a Parent Ambassador, and co-clerk of the PTO Nominating Committee. Jenny is also a longtime journalist and senior staff writer for Science magazine, where she writes about medical research. Originally from Toronto, Canada, Jenny is a graduate of Harvard College.

John Gilliland, Clerk:
John is an Assistant Clerk of PMFS School Committee, Clerk of the Building Committee and Currently serves on the Executive and Finance Committees. John is Co-Clerk of the Friends Education Equity Collaborative. An alumni parent, John has served in many capacities over the years, including Co-Clerk of the Advance Stage – Ten Generations Campaign, Auction Co-Clerk, PTO Treasurer and Food Program Coordinator. He is a graduate of the University of the South and has an MBA from Wake Forest University.

Jana Dean Gunby:
Jana is a PMFS Alum (1996) and current PMFS parent to Hart who is in the Butterfly Pre-K Class. Jana was a teacher in Philadelphia until her youngest son, Cal, was born. She currently teaches Yoga to adults and children in and around Philadelphia, including the early childhood classes at PMFS.

Dan Heider:
Dan serves on School Committee and Finance Committee. He and Rebecca have three children who have all attended PMFS, and he has previous experience as co-treasurer of PTO and as clerk of the Strategic Planning committee. He is a member of Chestnut Hill Friends Meeting. Originally from Minnesota, Dan attended Swarthmore and Berkeley and now lives in Chestnut Hill.

Ralph Henninger:
Ralph is the current PMFS Director of Development, Former Clerk of PMFS School Committee, Former Member of PMFS School Committee (18 years), a PMFS Alumni Parent and a Member of Plymouth Monthly Meeting.

Fran Johnston:
Fran Johnston, PhD is a parent to two young alums, and an organization development professional who founded Teleos Leadership Institute. She is on PMFS’ Executive Committee, and is passionate about progressive, experiential education.

Jeff Markovitz:
Jeff Markovitz is a parent of current students Nate (’20) and Luke (’19), alumni parent of Jane (’16) as well as member of the School Committee and Plymouth Monthly Meeting. Jeff is a committed volunteer and a true believer in the enormous transformative power of the PMFS experience and Friends Education.

Leann Stover Nyce:
Leann Stover Nyce has been connected to PMFS since 1999 when her daughter Lauren started in 1st grade. She joined the faculty in 2001 as a co-teacher with Varley in 6th grade when her daughter Isabel started Kindergarten. Since then she has worked in admissions and then transitioned to 5th grade and Director of the Mexican Exchange where she has been for the last 14 years.

Gillian Pokalo:
Gillian is the visual arts department faculty at PMFS and teaches the Butterflies through 6th grade. She facilitates the annual all-school ArtsFest, the Yearbook, and the visual design of the Musical. She also works on visual elements of the Fourth Grade Circus and is one of the school’s Beekeepers. When she’s not at school she has an active life as a professional artist and has shown her work in art markets and galleries around the Philadelphia area, and recently had a solo show at Duus Museum, Keflavik, Iceland, following an artist residency. She’s honored to be part of this process.

Erin Schmitt:
Erin is an alumni of PMFS and a parent of two current PMFS students (plus one two year-old). She has a BA in Women’s Studies from Temple University and a Masters in Acupuncture from the Won Institute. Erin is a Community Acupuncturist and currently manages a local non-profit that provides affordable Chinese medicine. She worked in the domestic violence field previously, managing children’s services and coordinating the Early Childhood and school-age programs.

Maura Sutherland:
Maura has been the PMFS Learning Support Specialist since the role was created here 13 years ago. Her three children attended PMFS and as a parent she served as PTO Food Program Coordinator, PTO Co-Clerk, Co-Chair of the capital campaign to build the Steinbright multi-purpose building and the art studio, and Coordinator of the school’s 230th anniversary celebration. Maura is a graduate of Ursinus College and has a M.Ed. from Penn State. Recently, Maura earned a Master’s Certificate in Mind, Brain, and Teaching from Johns Hopkins University. Her youngest son is approaching graduation at Abington Friends School.
