Take a Peek at What’s Happening in Our Classrooms
Our 2021 Back to School Night will be held virtually on Thursday, September 23 from 7 to 8:15pm. Teachers will host Zoom meetings for each class and will send links to parents. This is an opportunity to learn about the curriculum, classroom community, and plans for the year, as well as put faces to names of fellow parents. Short videos from the Head of School and the Specials teachers will be part of the program. Time will be reserved for general questions and meetings will be recorded so you don’t have to miss anything if you have children in more than one class. We are looking forward to seeing you on Thursday!
Naming Emotions in Fifth/Sixth
Journaling is part of Fifth/Sixth Graders’ daily morning meeting. This week we used a mood meter, a tool that helps us to identify and regulate our emotions (thanks to Facing History and Ourselves for the idea). Students used graph paper to create quadrants with x and y axes, where energy and pleasantness were the continuums. We listed emotions in each quadrant. The red quadrant is high energy and high unpleasant; students named emotions like anger, frustration and restlessness here. Yellow is high energy and high pleasant: joy and happiness, for example. Green is low energy but high pleasant, such as calm and serenity. Blue is low energy and low pleasant; sad and overwhelmed are examples the Fifth and Sixth Graders came up with. Being able to name our emotions is one step in healing, such as for these adolescents living through the pandemic.
Don’t forget! Complete your Daily Health Questionnaire
As a reminder, PMFS asks all families to participate in daily health screenings during the 2021-22 school year. Families receive a daily email reminder with a prompt to complete a checklist to ensure that their child/ren are symptom free prior to coming to campus. Parents can bookmark the questionnaire here.
New Teacher Spotlight!
We have five new faculty members this year! Each week we will feature one or two of them so you can get to know them a little better. First up….
Betsy and Nicola – new PreK Teachers in Journey’s End.
Betsy Norton brings over 17 years of experience in a variety of educational settings to her position as a Lead Pre-Kindergarten Teacher at PMFS. Betsy has been a Lead Teacher in Kindergarten, Transitional Kindergarten and PreK classrooms, as well as a daycare Center Director. Betsy’s philosophy on teaching in the early childhood setting is to develop an engaging environment where children have opportunities to learn through spontaneous play, as well as intentional, guided learning. Outside of school, Betsy is busy with her family – husband Ben, two sons, Liam and Lucas, and cockapoo, Maggie. She appreciates a great cup of coffee, dark chocolate and is at her happiest when music is playing nearby.
Nicola Robinson has been an Early Childhood educator for over 20 years. She joins the PMFS community as a Pre-Kindergarten Assistant Teacher. Nicola has been a Lead Teacher in Pre-K, Kindergarten, 2nd and 3rd grades in public, private and charter school settings. She was born on the island of Jamaica, and came to America as a teen. She considers herself to be a lifelong wanderer and a wonderer– traits that come naturally to children. She says, “This is one of the things I love most about working with children. They keep me youthful and looking at the world in new and exciting ways.” Outside of school, Nicola enjoys traveling, nature, cooking, family and friends.
Please Note: Time listed on the flyer is PACIFIC TIME. This lecture will be held from 9-10:15pm our time.
