Social-Emotional Learning in Pre-K

Social-emotional learning is integral to our Pre-K program. The class has been reading books to help identify their feelings like Today I Feel by Madalena Moniz and books about gratitude to help form the habit of being thankful for something each day. They also practice mindfulness and have short meditations in their outdoor classroom. Mindfulness and breathing help Pre-K students stay in the present moment, acknowledge their feelings, and let feelings move through through them to find peace.

In these pictures, students are learning to work out conflict with each other, using their words. It is a vital part of learning to be one member of a larger community.

Integrated Learning in One-Two: Tree Archaeology

First and Second Grade have been working on a “Tree Archaeology” unit with Varley during their project time, exploring the world of trees and rainforests and integrating the role of archaeology and archaeologists. They investigated trees and leaves on campus, which led to writing and drawing around the students’ observations. As part of their introduction to the Amazon Rainforest, the class read the Magic Tree House book Afternoon on the Amazon by Mary Pope Osborne. Now First and Second Graders can’t get enough of the Magic Tree House book series too!

Help More Students Attend PMFS

You can help more students experience a Plymouth education by directing your individual tax dollars to provide additional financial aid for PMFS students.

Our partner, the Friends Collaborative, has received approval for individual tax credits for the 2020 and 2021 tax year. With the help of our community, that can mean more financial aid dollars for PMFS and our 19 partner Friends schools.

Through Pennsylvania’s tax credit programs, qualified individuals can make a contribution to PMFS and receive 90% of the contribution back as a dollar-for-dollar reduction of their 2020 PA state taxes. This makes large gifts very inexpensive to make. For example, a $10,000 gift will cost a donor just $1000 to make, and if you itemize, you can also claim that $1000 as a charitable gift.

PMFS Closed on Election Day, 11/3

To allow adult community members to focus and participate fully in the election, Brenda and the PMFS School Committee have decided to close school on Tuesday, 11/3.

Place Your Orders for Pizza Day at PMFS!

The PTO is holding a weekly Pizza Day on Mondays throughout November (11/2, 11/9, 11/16, 11/23, 11/30) as a school fundraiser. If your child enjoyed the free pizza on 10/5, the Pizza Day slices will be from the same restaurant. Pepperoni and plain slices are available for $4.00 each. Order here by Thursday, 10/29.

Friendly Reminder

Please remember to wear a mask whenever you’re out of your car on campus. Thanks for keeping our community safe!

Family Interest: Virtual Pumpkin Carving Contest

The Chestnut Hill Community Association is inviting kids to submit photos of pumpkins they’ve carved through 10/29. Gift cards and fame (appearing in the Chestnut Hill Local) await the prize winners. See their website for more info.

Family Interest: Virtual Día de los Muertos

Download crafts to do at home or attend one of the virtual events centering Mexican culture and the Day of the Dead from the Penn Museum. More info here.

Campus Stewardship Initiative

Every Saturday (at least until the weather turns), we’re inviting families to help with some outside jobs, like weeding and picking up sticks. You can come whenever you want on a Saturday or organize to meet other families here. Please remember to socially distance, and stay as long or as little as you like. Click here for details and to sign up. Thanks for helping keep our campus beautiful!

Rachel Introduces Herself

My name is Rachel Doria. I am the new 5/6 Assistant Teacher working with Leann. I hold a Master’s degree in the field of Special Education with an additional certification in Elementary Education. Previously, I have worked with students on the spectrum ranging in age from early elementary to high school. I returned to my Quaker education roots last year as a preschool teacher at Gwynedd Friends School.
Many years ago, I attended Plymouth Meeting Friends School. I have always felt that it is possible to leave PMFS, but it never truly leaves you. I am excited to foster a strong classroom community while nurturing the unique talents of each student. What a warm welcome I have felt. I am thrilled to be part of this wonderful community again and show my own three kids, who are in pre-K, 1st and 4th grades here, how special PMFS is.
