Announcing Our New Head of School!

The PMFS School Committee is pleased to announce the appointment of Brenda C. Crawley to be Head of School starting July 1, 2019. The Search Committee enthusiastically recommended Brenda, observing that she is a highly engaging and committed educator with over 30 years of independent elementary school experience as a teacher and administrator. Equal in importance for the Search Committee is that she is a person of infectious energy and a true lover of life.

Brenda Crawley has served as Head of Lower School at Sandy Spring Friends School in Sandy Spring, MD, since 2011. Prior to this position, she was Head of Lower School at McLean School of Maryland in Potomac, MD, for 7 years, and she also served as Music Department Chair, Diversity Coordinator, and music teacher at McLean School. At Sandy Spring, she oversees PK3 through Grade 5, where her areas of expertise include faculty development, community building, learning differences, diversity, equity and inclusion. She served on the self-study steering committee for the Association of Independent Maryland and DC Schools Accreditation. Brenda holds an M.S. in Organization Development from The Carey Business School at Johns Hopkins University, and a Bachelor of Music from Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY.

Fun and Crafts at Fall Fest

The first Fall Festival had chilly weather, but lots of festive spirit! The Chili Cook-Off had EIGHT contestants, with a wide variety of ingredients and flavors. The winning chili was pork chili verde cooked by Matt George and presented in an Eagles crockpot. Nicole McEntee’s classic beef and bean chili was the runner-up. Want the recipes? Get them here.

While parents were choosing “gently used clothing” from the sale, kids were enjoying painting pumpkins and making puppets from paper bags with help from Fifth Grade.  John B and Fourth Grade taught a circle dance from Colonial America. Some of our most recent alumni came and enjoyed the Fest too!

Thank you PTO for organizing this great community-building event!

Paddle-to-the-Sea found in Maryland!

Every year, Third Grade reads the book Paddle-to-the-Sea by Holling Clancy Holling. The story follows the journey of a boy’s toy canoe as it floats through the Great Lakes, and eventually to the Atlantic Ocean. Each December, Third Graders build their own “Paddle-to-the-Sea” boats and release them over the falls at Fairmount Water Works.

Yesterday David received this photo of a boat from last year’s class, along with a note: “We found your boat on the shore at Triton Marina, MD on 10/13/18. We waited for the outgoing tide, then set it free.”

Halloween Parade, following Family Breakfast, on 10/31

Got a scream-worthy recipe for pumpkin bread? How about boo-berry muffins? Why not make a batch of your favorite spooky treat and join other parents at the PTO Halloween Breakfast! It’s Wednesday, October 31st starting at 8am in the Annie H. Wilson room. Come warm up with a ghoulishly delightful cup of coffee and a frightfully delicious breakfast before the parade begins. Please sign up to help or bring treats:

The parade starts a 8:30; help us create the parade route for the kids! Line the path along the playground and lower campus so that kids get to parade by you (hint: it’s an easy way to get some good pictures too). Then come on up to the blacktop where kids (and adults?) show off their costumes!
