Third Graders at Kepner Creek
Third Graders visited the Norristown Farm Park last Thursday and explored the Kepner Creek watershed. They got their feet wet as they flipped over rocks in search of aquatic insects and other organisms. They found water pennies, caddisfly larvae, crayfish, fresh water clams, water striders, and flatworms. Third Graders sorted their collections based on how sensitive or tolerant each organism was to pollution and then used this data as indicators for the health of the creek. Based on their collecting, they determined the water quality of Kepner Creek was fair.
The students considered the possible sources of pollution and how they entered the watershed, such as erosion and runoff from the paved parking lot. Third Graders want you to know that you can help keep our local waterways healthy by removing litter from the ground, picking up after your dog, and considering the use of non-toxic cleaning products. Together we can be good stewards of our watersheds!
Busy Student Artists!
We are off to an incredible start in Art this year! Our Second Graders are currently working on Arboles de la Vida, or “Trees of Life” sculptures, inspired by those made by Metepec artists in Mexico. They are creating coil structures for the trees and will be adding flora, fauna, and personal narratives to each of their intricately designed creations. Additionally, they have joined the First Grade in creating bowls for the Empty Bowls Dinner. The dinner will be held at United Lutheran Seminary on Wednesday, November 20 to benefit the work of the Philadelphia Interfaith Hospitality Network. For more information, please see this flyer, and we hope to see you at this family-friendly event!
Our 6th graders are busy creating a mural for the entrance of the Admissions building. The piece is a reflection on what their experience at PMFS means to them, and they are relishing the chance to collaborate on this special project. Each student contributed ideas and sketches which we have collaged together to create a work of art that will be enjoyed for years to come. When you head over to the Admissions and Development offices to say hi to Joyce and Ralph, check it out (they’re almost done!).
