Color Day Success: An Inspiring Model for Community Building

Yesterday, Parent-Teacher Conference Day was transformed into Color Day!

Students in Kindergarten through Sixth Grade spent their day in eight mixed-age Color Pods engaging in a variety of small-group and whole-school activities focused on our theme for the Day, PEACE (in the Quaker Testimonies, the “P” in S.P.I.C.E.S.). Butterflies joined assigned pods for portions of the day including Meeting for Worship, morning activities””including paper mache, origami, finger knitting, and mandala creation to produce items to decorate our peace tent “”the assembly, and peace parade. Fifth and Sixth Graders were charged with leading their pods through the schedule for the day, putting into action leadership skills that are built throughout their time at PMFS, and that the students outlined themselves in an orientation earlier in the week (click here to see the students’ reflections on the qualities of a leader). They navigated their leadership roles beautifully, caring for their group members throughout the day.

Here is the Green pod’s reflection on the day:

Winter Wassail & Community Sing Update!

Dear Families,

As our children our preparing for their upcoming Thanksgiving concert in less than two weeks, I’d like to draw your attention to the next musical event on our campus: The Winter Wassail and Community Sing.

This year will be a little different than in the past. Instead of the traditional concert format (as at Thanksgiving), our students and faculty will lead us in a more intimate celebration of the coming of winter through shared song and holiday cheer! This less formal event will open up more musical exploration time in class for our children in December and give them a break from the rigors of concert preparation after Thanksgiving. As a result, we are excited about creating more opportunities in the Spring for our students to perform and showcase the skills and musical journeys they’ve been on all year. Stay tuned!

The 2017 PMFS soccer team rounded out an exciting and fun-filled season with a game against PMFS parents this past Wednesday. Fifteen Fifth and Sixth Graders played this year, creating a mix of seasoned and first-time soccer players. The soccer season is eight weeks long and meets once per week to either play a game or practice. The kids had seven games this year against three different schools with students ranging in age Fourth – Sixth grade. Coach Jim says he was pleasantly surprised with the teamwork and camaraderie they displayed in such a short amount of time. The season has been a major success. Not only are the kids having fun, but they also are learning what it means to display good sportsmanship and how to work together to be a successful team.

The games this year have been packed with excitement. All the games have been really competitive and one game even ended with a successful penalty kick for PMFS. Overall, Jim is really proud of of how well the kids performed and the excitement and fun they displayed throughout the season.
