Fifth Grade Reflects on the Exchange

Fifth Graders said “adiós” to their buddies last Thursday, but they won’t be apart long! The class heads to Mexico for two weeks on February 28. So what do they think of the Exchange so far? Here it is in their own words:

“It was such a privilege to be part of this awesome and amazing exchange with the Williams school.”

“The Mexican exchange is really cool because you get to do a lot of fun stuff with [your buddy] like going on cool field trips and also doing stuff out of school like watching a movie or ice skating.”

“This exchange was so important because so far we have learned to be independent and be good hosts.”

“It teaches the Fifth Graders to be responsible, patient, smart with their money, but most importantly to be a friend to every buddy.”

“We are so excited to go to Mexico. I have been looking forward to this since Kindergarten.”

Bringing Stories to Life in First Grade

Starting this week, First Graders are participating in a series of “Create Your Own Fairy Tale” workshops led by teaching artists from Theatre Horizon. The visiting artists will lead students in exercises to allow them to either create their own fairy tales or perform a well-known story in Reader’s Theater style. Students will work as a class to pick characters, settings, relationships between the characters, problems, and solutions. They will think about the elements of storytelling that they studied in class, then directly apply these terms and concepts to their own collaborative presentation.

How the Polar Vortex Warmed My Heart

by Amanda

I had an amazing day last Thursday. It was cold, and I was so bundled up I didn’t recognize myself in a store window, but it was amazing. This was the day we had a two-hour delay because the temperature was in the single digits. The conditions were perfect for scientific exploration!

The kids were so excited to learn about how ice forms. They put a bowl of water on the blacktop and hypothesized how long it would take to turn to ice. Students set timers and ran outside to measure the water temperature at intervals. We made predictions, observations, and some less-than-scientific wild speculations. Together we turned what could have been a miserably cold day into a joyfully cold day. As one kid put it, “We OWNED the polar vortex… with science!”
