Around Campus with David: Quantity

As I moved around campus this week I got to witness our students working on the idea of quantifying — fitting, since we just celebrated our hundredth day of school! Our Dragonflies were thinking about the key ideas of more, fewer, and less. Martha was displaying these ideas with cubes and through reading:

Our Fourth Grade was creating balloon-propelled vehicles and seeing what distance they could cover:

Our Sixth Grade was figuring out how long it would take to travel to Mars, given a certain velocity. Notice Nate in the classroom; Matt will be the lead teacher and Nate will be the assistant for the next two weeks while Varley is in Mexico:

And finally in the Spanish room, I noticed “cuantos,” the Spanish word for “how many”:

It was fun to see our students working in groups, gaining different perspectives on similar concepts.

Circus Rehearsals Getting Down to the (High) Wire

As these final days unfold, Fourth Graders are starting to run through the show and are gaining more and more confidence. Will plays a game to help his performers remember what to do in each act. He gives each student a random scene, then asks them, “Where are you standing (or unicycling!) and what do you have in your hands?”

Circus Math is still a big part of the production. Kids will soon have to figure out how to fit 280 seats in the gym. How can they fill the space most effectively? Do we have 70 rows of 4 seats? Probably not. How about 10 rows of 28 or 28 rows of 10? It’s a great lesson that also gets the chairs set up!

Performances are Friday & Saturday, March 15 & 16 at 7:00 pm.To pay by card, buy your tickets online here. To pay by cash or check, turn in this form to Maeve & Kelly. These tickets sell fast, so don’t count on buying them at the door!
