Zoom on Zoom Circus!

Even in a pandemic the show must go on!  This spring, Pod 3/4 will present the first ever PMFS Circus on Zoom!  Based on the 1970s/1990s television show Zoom, all are busily practicing, making manipulatives, and writing skits. Throughout this process, students are strengthening their skills in cooperation, adaptability, and perseverance. Stay tuned for how your family can tune in in May to this year’s unique and special performance.

Artists in Pod 3/4 Connecting in Creating Coil Pots

While Pod 3/4 is learning about the Underground Railroad in Social Studies, in Art they are learning about Dave Drake, also known as Dave the Potter, an important artist from South Carolina during the mid-1800s. As an enslaved man, he learned how to read and write and courageously wrote poems on his pottery and signed his work. His pottery is highly valued today and can be found at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, as well as museums around the world. 3rd and 4th graders have also learned about face jugs, that were made by other enslaved artists from that time and which were deeply symbolic. Ben Watford and Jim McDowell are artists who still create these face jugs today to connect with their ancestors and teach about the artists who came before them. Under Gillian’s guidance, students are making pottery inspired by these artists’ works and are using coil building techniques.
