Color Day in One Week

We’re gearing up for our second Color Day next Thursday, April 12. Nurtured by specials and admin, students will spend the day in cross-grade color “pods” led by Fifth and Sixth Grade students. This day allow students to explore a theme through contemplation, reading, an assembly, … and a lot of hands-on fun. This April, students will survey the Quaker testimony of Community (Friends use the acronym S.P.I.C.E.S. to refer to the testimonies. Do you know what the acronym stands for? If not, click here for a quick tutorial). Throughout the day, students will be invited to consider:

  • How do we build and maintain community?
  • What are the gifts of our community?
  • What is my role in community?
  • What communities am I a part of?

How will this affect you and your child?

  • Students in Kindergarten through 6th Grade should go directly to the Steinbright Gym upon arrival. (Staff will be around to guide them there if you or they forget.)
  • Butterflies should begin the day in their classroom in Journey’s End, and will join their pods for part of the day’s activities most appropriate for them.
  • Caterpillars will remain in the Little House for the day.
  • Dismissal for our Early Childhood students- Caterpillars and Butterflies- and for our Kindergartners will be at their normal locations, in Journey’s End and Little House.
  • Dismissal for First through Sixth Graders will be on the blacktop (no pick up at Emerson) at 3:00 pm.
  • Snack for Butterflies, Kindergarten, and First through Sixth Grades will be provided by the school! Students will not have access to their backpacks and lunchboxes at snack time.
  • Lunch: if your child participates in the food program on Thursdays, the food will be delivered as usual.

Please remind your student of these adjustments for the day. We thank you in advance for helping us with these logistics so that we can focus on making this day a success for the students.

Learning about Refugees Developing into Action

On Wednesday, PMFS Second Graders and their Fourth Grade buddies got a visit from Lily’s uncle! Doug Herman has dedicated a great deal of time to working with refugees in various ways and shared his work with the 1976km project, an organization started by Sonia Nandzik and Doug which helps refugees tell their stories through video and photography. Students heard about some of Doug’s travels and experiences in refugee camps in Lesbos, Greece.

They then explored on iPads and Chromebooks, searching the photos for images that they found interesting, wondering what the people in the photograph may be feeling, where they came from, and what story the photo was telling. Each group selected one photo and learned the story behind those images from Doug. Our heartfelt thanks to Doug for spending this time with our students.

The classes will follow up with a plan for action this week and hope to write letters to refugees to let them know, in the words of 4th Grader Nate, that “they are seen.”

Urgent Request from Second Grade

Blankets & Bucks

Second Graders are collecting blankets for Narenj Tree, an organization in Norristown which focuses on aid to displaced Syrian citizens. We will have our broader annual collection for Narenj Tree in May. But there is an urgent need for items to give warmth to the Syrians fleeing the recent violence in Ghouta, as well as money to expedite shipping.

Please consider donating a clean, gently-used or new blanket(s) along with $5.  Since this is an urgent need, we will only be collecting blankets and bucks through next Friday, April 13.

Send your donations in with your child, deliver to the Second Grade classroom in the Emerson building in the morning or to the office during the day, or bring during conference days next week.

Thank you for helping us to help others!

Faculty News

I wanted to let you know that Kelley Lishon’s last day at PMFS was March 28. Over the past two and a half years as Director of Communications, Marketing, & Outreach, Kelley brought our communications materials to a new level of professionalism and design. She led our community through an inclusive process to redesign the school logo and led the process of creating our new website. As an administrator, Kelley was often first to volunteer to help in whatever way was needed. I thank Kelley for her service to the school and wish her all the best.

I am thankful to our administrators for assuming various communications responsibilities for the reminder of the year. For example, Joyce is returning to creation of the weekly Virtual Red Folder and Lynn is increasing her writing for PMFS to create and share press releases, articles, social media posts, and more. I will oversee these efforts to align them with our ongoing communication goals.

Don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have.
