Pre-Kers Lend a Hand
Part of being in Pre-K is beginning to understand the world beyond ourselves. This age is categorized as an egocentric time, so connecting to our larger school community helps us to realize that the world is bigger than ourselves. Connecting with others has been challenging because of Covid so we seize any opportunity to do so safely. As we passed David and Jonathan there were many questions about mulch and its purpose. They kindly answered them all and even involved us in their process! We love developing this fellowship around campus!
Pod 3/4 Art
This week Pod 3/4 put to use all of their hand building techniques to create narrative and expressive portrait busts in clay, inspired by artist Augusta Savage. They also glazed their pottery from their last session, where they made coil pots inspired by artist Dave Drake.
Learning to Speak Up and Speak Out
Students and teachers were wowed by the program at today’s Elementary Student Diversity Day (ESDD), attended by students in grades 3-6 at 11 schools from the Greater Philadelphia Diversity Collaborative. PMFS students took part in synchronous workshops with students from other schools and asynchronous workshops within their own classrooms, helping them become better “upstanders” for social justice. The workshops were varied and impactful, including: using abstract art to consider perspective, discussing contradictions in the news, using math to discuss equity, and looking into how to stand up while taking care of one’s own feelings.
Student takeaways were powerful, as they shared that they learned about microaggressions, racism, and risks. They described the day as enlightening, empowering, and fun. Work from the day is being collected to post online; we’ll alert you so you can see and discuss with your students.
Many thanks to the organizers of this important and unique event for elementary students, especially our 5/6 Pod teacher Leann Stover Nyce. PMFS was the host for this virtual extravaganza, and Leann’s energy and leadership was a vital force in preparing for this year’s ESDD.
